The three decisions that determine whether a breast milk storage bag is safe and reliable are the film, the closure, and the compliance documentation. If you get those right — a food-grade, low-odor PE film; a leak-resistant press-to-close zipper; and EU or US food-contact documents for your market — the rest (capacity, volume scale, sterilization, print) is program-level specification you can settle with a supplier in a single request for quote.

Foldveil makes breast milk storage bags as a made-to-order flexible-packaging program (model FV-FP-BMB). They are produced from self-produced odorless PE film with a tasteless zipper, under high-standard hygiene production, with pre-sterilized options and a printed volume scale available per program. As with every Foldveil product, food-contact and sterilization claims are verified for the specific factory, material and production run, and the supporting documentation is shared with the quotation.

Film and material: why food-grade PE is the default

Polyethylene (PE) is the standard material for breast milk bags for three practical reasons:

  • It stays soft and flexible at freezer temperature, so a filled bag freezes flat without cracking.
  • It seals reliably, both on the factory-sealed edges and on a press-to-close top.
  • Low-odor grades are available — and odor neutrality matters because breast milk picks up off-flavors and off-odors easily.

Confirm these three points when you evaluate a film:

What to confirm Why it matters
The film is a food-grade PE grade Milk is a sensitive food; the film must be suitable for direct food contact
The grade is low-odor or odorless Milk absorbs smells and off-tastes
The zipper is food-grade and low-odor The closure touches the milk the same way the film does

Thickness is a program-level choice, not something you need to pre-decide. Thinner films cost less and freight more cheaply but feel less substantial; thicker films are stiffer, easier to handle one-handed while pouring, and more puncture-resistant. A competent supplier will propose a thickness from your fill capacity and how the bag will be used.

Foldveil's breast milk bags are made from self-produced odorless PE film. Producing the film in-house is what keeps odor and taste consistent from run to run — a detail that matters more for milk than for most other products.

Closure: what "leak-resistant" actually means

There are two common closure approaches:

  • Press-to-close (zipper) top — the most common. Single or double zipper profiles; a double zipper adds confidence against leaks at a small cost premium.
  • Heat-sealed or tear-off top — sealed by the user or at the factory; simplest, but effectively single-use once opened.

"Leak-proof" is not a material property; it is a test result. When you receive samples, check:

  • Fill to the marked line, close, invert and shake — nothing should escape.
  • Freeze the filled bag flat, then drop it once from counter height — the film and the seal should both hold.

Foldveil's zipper is tasteless and odorless, and leak resistance is confirmed during sampling rather than promised as a fixed universal value.

Capacity, volume scale and print

Choose capacity around how much a baby drinks in a single feeding, then keep it consistent across SKUs. A printed volume scale (graduation marks) lets parents measure accurately and is standard on most programs.

Print matters here because the graduations have to be fine, repeatable and readable after freezing. Foldveil prints these bags by gravure, which suits precisely this kind of high-volume, line-accurate work. See our packaging printing methods guide for how gravure compares with flexo and digital.

Sterilization and hygiene

Decide early whether the bag needs to arrive pre-sterilized:

  • Pre-sterilized bags are ready to use straight from a controlled line. Ask which method is used and whether it is validated for the line.
  • Non-sterilized bags cost less but rely on the parent's own handling hygiene.

Foldveil offers pre-sterilized options per program. Confirm the method and validation for your program during quoting — do not accept an unstated sterilization method on a product for infants.

Food-contact compliance documents (EU and US)

Breast milk bags are food-contact packaging, and milk for infants is treated as a sensitive use. Ask for:

  • EU: a Declaration of Compliance under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and, where applicable, migration test reports covering the film and zipper.
  • US: FDA food-contact status for the film and closure.

Foldveil's policy is that food-contact and sterilization claims are confirmed for the specific factory, material and production run, with the documentation shared alongside the quotation — not assumed as a blanket "certified" statement. For the full document checklist, read our food-contact packaging document pack for EU and US buyers.

How to quote a breast milk bag program

Item What to specify
Capacity Target fill volume per bag (single feeding)
Film Food-grade, odorless PE
Closure Single or double press-to-close zipper
Sterilization Pre-sterilized or not; method if pre-sterilized
Volume scale Printed graduations — yes/no and print color
Quantity Total pieces per order (mixed sizes can combine)
Market EU, US, or both — this determines the compliance documents
Artwork Brand print and print-ready files

If you are also running stand-up zipper pouches, spout pouches or flat-bottom pouches for the same brand, the same food-contact discipline applies across every format.

You can start the quote with just capacity and quantity. Send your spec through the RFQ form and we'll confirm the film, closure, sterilization and compliance scope with the quotation.
