Bag-in-box (BIB) packaging holds liquid in a flexible inner bag inside a corrugated carton and dispenses it through a tap or valve. It is a practical format for wine, drinking water, edible oil, juice concentrate and refill household liquids, because the pack is lighter than rigid glass and the bag collapses as it empties. Specifying the right BIB system comes down to four decisions: how oxygen-sensitive your liquid is, what barrier structure the liner needs, which tap or valve your filling line and customers can actually use, and which compliance documents your destination market requires. Work through those four points and you can send a supplier one complete brief instead of a vague request for "bag-in-box".
Why brands use bag-in-box
BIB earns its place on three practical arguments, not on hype:
- Less packaging weight per litre. A flexible liner plus a corrugated carton replaces a rigid glass or heavy plastic container. Empty liners also ship flat to the filling site, so inbound freight is mostly the cartons.
- The bag collapses as it empties. Because the liner shrinks around the remaining liquid, air is not sucked back in after each pour. That is the mechanism behind the format's longer open-shelf life for oxygen-sensitive drinks.
- One supplier can own the whole pack. The liner, tap and outer carton are three components that must fit together. Buying them as one engineered system avoids mismatched fitments.
The open-shelf-life benefit depends on real engineering, not on the format alone. Decision 1 — Start with the liquid and its failure mode
The right liner is defined by what ruins your product, not by what looks premium. Oxygen drives wine aroma loss and oil rancidity. Light accelerates the same reactions. Water is less oxygen-driven but is highly sensitive to taste, odour and migration from the film. Concentrates may be filled hot or aseptically, which changes the seal and barrier requirement before you even talk about the tap.

Ask your supplier for a barrier recommendation based on the product and target shelf life, then request the test report that supports it. Decision 2 — Choose the liner structure
BIB liners fall into two broad groups:
- Transparent coextruded or laminated films, usually polyethylene-based. They are a good fit for water, short-shelf-life beverages and many non-food liquids where oxygen barrier is not the deciding factor.
- Barrier laminates containing EVOH or metallized film for oxygen- and light-sensitive products. EVOH barrier films for bag-in-box are used because they keep oxygen and light away from the product while remaining flex-crack resistant through handling and transport.

Decision 3 — Match the tap to the dispensing pattern
Tap choice is a user experience decision as much as a technical one. A bar or a household wine drinker, a cook dosing oil, and a foodservice dispenser all need different valves.

Confirm the valve material is appropriate for your product (food-contact where relevant) and that the fitment matches your filling equipment. Decision 4 — Engineer the outer carton and freight together
For a classic bag-and-box pack, the corrugated carton is not a commodity box. It has to carry the weight of the filled bag, survive stacking and palletizing, and still work as the print surface for your brand. Confirm the filled pack weight, the number of packs per layer and the pallet pattern before you fix the carton board grade.
Because liquid is heavy, the biggest freight lever is usually not the bag — it is the container you are replacing and the space the pack wastes on a pallet. The applicable route depends on the material structure, the factory and the production run, so ask for the documentation scope rather than a generic claim. The RFQ checklist for a bag-in-box liner
Send the supplier these eight points and you will get a comparable quote on the first round:
- Product name and viscosity, plus fill temperature (ambient, hot-fill or aseptic).
- Target shelf life and whether the product is oxygen- or light-sensitive.
- Capacity per bag (for example 3 L, 5 L, 10 L or 20 L) and the outer carton dimensions you want to hit.
- Tap or valve type, and whether the fitment must match existing filling or dispensing equipment.
- Filled pack weight and pallet/stacking requirements for the carton.
- Destination market, so the correct food-contact or chemical-compliance scope can be confirmed.
- Print requirements for the outer carton.
- Annual volume and order frequency, so the supplier can propose the right production route.
Get those eight answers in writing and the "which bag-in-box?" question becomes a supplier selection problem instead of a packaging guess.
